It was a day of fond memories on Saturday September 14 when Father Bob’s Foundation celebrated what would have been the 90th birthday of its late founder and figurehead, the inimitable Father Bob Maguire.
As the author of his 2013 biography, Father Bob: Larrikin Priest, I was invited down to take part in the weekend of celebrations, commiserations and fundraising for the homeless and those struggling to make ends meet in Melbourne.
And we all came together, clients and supporters alike, to remember the man who started it all.
I took part in a panel to discuss the good father, along with our host, writer and comedian John Safran, Chair of the Foundation Adrian Kinderis, Thinkerbell genius Adam Ferrier and A Current Affair reporter Seb Costello.
We all told our fondest stories about Father Bob, recalled the chaos he always left in his wake, and acclaimed his genius for making people laugh, even in the midst of the deepest sorrow. We finished with a heartfelt rendition of Happy Birthday To You, and slicing up a birthday cake.
And the most poignant moment? Agreeing on how much he would have enjoyed the occasion. RIP dear man, no doubt rocking heaven with the laughter of angels.
