Reaching the heights

No trip to Berlin would be complete without a trip up to the top of Germany’s tallest building, its 1960s TV tower, built by East Germany to show the world the power of its regime. The sphere of the tower was intended to remind people of the Soviet sputnik satellites and was to light up red, the colour of socialism. Now, it’s become a symbol of the reunified country and today, it’s the closest most of us can get to the leader of the most powerful capitalist country – US President Joe Biden is down there near the Brandenburg Gate meeting his European Allies on a visit to Berlin.
