I’ve always wanted to visit the Shetlands, the northernmost region of the UK — 170km north of mainland Scotland and 220km west of Norway. So it was such a thrill having a day there at the end of our 7-day Norwegian Fjord and Shetland cruise, especially after watching so many series of the hit British TV crime series, Shetland. It was suitably bleak and grey and rainy, which only really added to the menacing atmosphere, with even the cows looking gloomy. But there were some beautiful historic sights, like over to St Ninian’s Isle and its 12th Century chapel, and some gorgeously warming ones, like a bowl of hot Cullen skink, a traditional  Scottish soup made of smoked haddock, potatoes, and onions. Just the thing for fuelling the searches on the island for puffins and Shetland ponies.
