How thick are the walls that surround Valletta, the Maltese capital? They range from three metres to around 30 metres … fortifications that began in the 1500s and were only finished in the 1800s. Many still stand, untouched, today as, in the end, no enemy ever tried, or succeeded, in penetrating them. Instead, the enemy in World War II arrived by air … in heavy Axis bombing.
