The Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw, the tower that Stalin built during the Soviet occupation of Poland which was once the tallest clock tower in the world. It was meant as a testament of Soviet power and authority, but Stalin’s name was taken off it as soon as the Soviets left and it’s now used by theatres, cafes and arts organisations, with a viewing terrace near the top of the 237-metre tower with fabulous views. Some locals still hate it, as a memory of that era, but many now accept it for its other uses. But it still has a variety of nicknames from rakieta Stalina (Stalin’s rocket”) to chuj Stalina (which, given its shape, you might be able to guess …)
