The welcoming reception of the World Travel & Tourism Council’s annual global summit in Valletta was held at Fort Manoel on Manoel Island, built in the 18th century by the Knights Hospitaller. The fabulous example of Baroque architecture is to the north west of Valletta, and commands Marsamxett Harbour and the anchorage of Sliema Creek. After a cocktail-and-canapes evening with a 25-piece (!) band, the evening was finished off with a display of fireworks. Fascinating to find out that Maltese people love fireworks perhaps even more than Sydneysiders!
